If we don't learn to change the way we think, we won't be able to solve the problems we create because of the way we think

A cultural program titled " Μαθαίνοντας Ιστορία με ψηφιακά εργαλεία" (Learning History with Digital Tools) was implemented by teachers Eleftheria Pachiadaki and Sofia Polychronaki and 15 students from class B5. The subject focuses on the study of the history of the city of Heraklion during the Byzantine and Venetian periods. The students engaged with Venetian era monuments through guided tours and visits to the Historical Museum of Heraklion and were informed about the creation of interactive maps and other digital tools at the Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory of FORTH. The students proceeded to create and utilize an interactive digital map using modern technologies with the aim of disseminating combined information via the internet. The use of digital maps in teaching and everyday life highlights the unique character (historical, cultural, geographical) of a place. The creation of a digital, interactive map, tailored to the needs of users and the educational objectives of the history lesson, is the main goal of this activity. Finally, the students created a digital book with information about the monuments of the Venetian period in our area.

On April 5, 2024, a group of 13 students of the 2nd grade of the 13th Gymnasium of Heraklion with their accompanying teachers, Ms. Bitzaraki Leda and Sophia Polychronaki, participated in the extremely interesting educational program of the IMC "Ditch, a fortified and unfortified city". Through the Museum's evidence and on-site observation, both in the museum itself and in the streets of our city, with the help and encouragement of the music teachers, the students discovered different aspects of the history of their city. The experiential nature of the program moved and kept the interest of the students, who participated actively and enthusiastically throughout its duration. The visit was part of the cultural program "Learning History with digital tools" which is implemented at the school with the aim of allowing students to discover new ways of approaching local history by utilizing modern digital tools with responsible teachers Ms. Pachiadaki Eleftheria (English language teacher) and Ms. Polychronaki Sophia (history teacher).

On Tuesday 16/04/2024 two professors and 13 students of the B5 class of our school had an educational visit at the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH), specifically in the human and computer interaction laboratory in AMI building, in the laboratory of the Institute of Electronic Structure and laser as well as in the University Publications of FORTH.

This experience is an important opportunity for our students to delve into the exciting world of technology and science. This visit was not just a visit but mainly a valuable educational experience that will be a source of inspiration and creativity for our students. They also interacted with computers, learned about programs for creating interactive maps and understood with the help of experts how lasers are used in the preservation of cultural heritage. All in all, we students and professors came into contact with a small part of the research work that is carried out in this important scientific center for our country.

We sincerely thank the staff FORTH who welcomed us with warmth and professionalism, as well as for the valuable knowledge and experience they shared with us. Also, we express our thanks to the University Publications of FORTH University Publications of FORTH for the hospitality and the opportunity to explore the world of publishing and their contribution to books to enrich our school's library.

We hope that this visit will help the students to realize the objectives of our program "Learning history with digital tools", will also enhance their interest and curiosity about technology and science and that it will perhaps inspire them to pursue academic and research careers.

On Tuesday 27/2/2024, as part of the cultural program "Learning history with digital tools", the students enjoyed the educational tour of the Venetian Moat by Mrs. Athina Sfakaki, giving us the opportunity to learn a piece of the history of our city with unknown facts and details about the city.

We started from the Jesus Gate, the Bebo and Priuli Fountain, the Mandonina and Voltone Gate sites, the Byzantine-Arabic Wall, the Morozini Fountain, the Basilica of St. Mark, the Loggia and ended up at Agios Titos. These are just some of the places where we wandered around the city of Heraklion and were guided through their history.

Several of these points are places that our students pass by every day and do not notice or even know of their existence.

We sincerely thank Ms. Athena Sfakaki for the voluntary and very interesting tour as well as the Cultural Association of Saint John for the support of our program.
